BUYER'S GUIDE
Snowboards
Navigating the world of snowboarding gear can be daunting, especially when it's for your young shredder. But fear not! Finding the right board for your kiddo is a lot simpler than it seems. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you make an informed decision.
Find the right board size
Generally speaking, weight is the most critical factor in deciding snowboard size. However, with kids, height is an important consideration as well. Most brands offer recommended weight ranges, but neglect height and recommended boot size. Here are some general guidelines to fitting your child at home:
- Measure from the ground to your child's eyes (in centimeters).
- Round the measurement to the closest board size available. For example, if your child's eyes are 123cm from the ground, this means they can fit into a 120 or 125. When in doubt, err on the side of longer, because kids are always growing.
- Reference the table below to make sure your child’s boot size fits with the board.

General Board Buying Tips
After you've considered board length and compatible boots, there are some other general tips you should always consider:
- 💪 Flex Matters Younger or lighter riders typically benefit from a softer flexing board, as it's easier to maneuver.
- 🌱 Think About Growth Kids grow quickly! While you want a board that suits them now, if you're hoping for a couple of seasons out of it, you might want to consider if they'll outgrow it in terms of weight or height soon.
- ⛰️ Consider the Terrain If your child is into park riding, they might prefer a different board than if they were primarily riding groomed runs or powder.
- 🧱 Look for Durability Kids can be tough on gear. Opt for boards known for their durability without compromising performance.
- 🪢 Add Accessories Some kids boards are compatible with accessories. For example, Burton's Riglet Reel can be really helpful for a brand new mini shredder.
If possible, try to involve your child in the process. Not only will this get them excited about the sport, but they might also have specific preferences about the board's design or brand.

Boots
Properly fitting snowboard boots might be the most important of the entire setup. If your little shredder's feet are uncomfortable, they're not going to have a good time.
Find the right boot size
Fit is paramount. Above all, ensure the boots fit snugly without causing pain. A well-fitted boot will provide better control over the snowboard.
-
Measure your child's foot
- Lay a blank sheet of paper on a hard surface.
- Have your child stand on the paper with the socks they'd typically wear for snowboarding.
- Mark the longest points of their foot (from the heel to the tip of their longest toe).
- Measure the length in centimeters.
- Do this for both feet and use the larger measurement for reference, as one foot might be slightly larger than the other.
-
Use Brand-Specific Sizing Charts
- Each snowboard boot brand can have variations in their sizes. Always use the specific chart for the brand you're considering.
- Match the measurement from Step 1 to the brand's size guide.
- If available, also refer to width guidelines if your child has especially narrow or wide feet.

General Boot Buying Tips
In addition to making sure you've got the correct size, there's a few other important considerations to remmeber when buying boots for your child:
- 🌱 Room to Grow While you might be tempted to buy boots with a little extra room for growth, avoid going too big. Excessive space can lead to reduced control and cold feet. Instead, look for boots that fit well with perhaps just a tiny bit of extra toe room.
- ⚟ Lacing Systems There are different lacing systems available – traditional laces, quick-pull systems, and BOA dials. For kids, quick-pull and BOA systems are often easier for them to handle without assistance.
- 👣 Check the Liner Some boots come with removable, heat-moldable liners which can contour to the shape of the child's foot, providing a more customized fit.
- ⭐ Stay Within Brand Particularly with kids' gear, it's beneficial to keep boots and bindings within the same brand to ensure compatibility. The boots are designed to fit perfectly with bindings from the same brand. That being said, Union bindings work with just about anything!
- 🧦 Don't Skimp on Socks A good pair of snowboarding socks can significantly impact comfort. Avoid cotton; opt for materials like merino wool that wick moisture and retain warmth.
Remember that comfort is king. Even the most technically advanced boot won't do any good if it's causing discomfort. Regularly check with your child after rides to see if there are any pain points or discomfort.

General Binding Buying Tips
Bindings might seem a bit complicated, but they're actually pretty straightfoward. There are a few important tips to keep in mind when buying kids' snowboard bindings:
- 🚪 Ease of Entry and ExitLook for bindings that are easy for your child to get in and out of. Speed-entry or rear-entry bindings can be more straightforward for younger riders, although traditional strap-ins offer more adjustability.
- ⚙️ AdjustabilityAs your child grows and their skills develop, having adjustable bindings can be a boon. Look for bindings where the highback, straps, and stance can be easily adjusted.
- 🤝 CompatibilityGenerally, it's best to match boots and bindings from the same brand where possible. They were designed specifically for eachother.
- 💪🏾 Flex RatingLike snowboards, bindings have a flex rating. For beginners, especially young children, a softer flex is generally recommended. It's more forgiving and easier for them to maneuver.
Remember, a well-fitted and suitable binding enhances the connection between the rider and the board, ensuring better control and a more enjoyable experience.
